Carbon emissions - offset yours, by planting trees with Feed The Children UK

Feed The Children's programmes don't just help people to help themselves, with education, training and resources for self-help.

With today's concern about the environment, and the carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming - not to mention the rising cost of fuel - we are all being challenged to cut down the energy we use. However, that's not enough.

The earth's forests are its lungs; trees absorb carbon dioxide - up to 29 kilos per year - and produce oxygen. Yet at the same time as our emissions are rising, forests are disappearing.

Feed The Children's programmes include care for the environment; wherever we can, we look for solutions that use local resources and labour, and minimise waste.

Our tree nursery programmes in Uganda fulfil a variety of needs:

  • School children gain skills in horticulture, by planting and caring for two trees.
  • One tree provides fruit
  • The other tree is a fast-growing variety which can be cut for firewood.
  • The children take home a simple message to their families: "If you cut down a tree, plant two more!"
  • They learn to manage their trees, and make them a sustainable resource for their community.
  • The trees absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen.
