Pakistan Earthquake 2005

In October 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale hit the

Hindu Kush mountain range, in northern Pakistan and Kashmir, causing the

death of around 74,000 people, and leaving more than three million people

homeless.

Feed The Children is working with a humanitarian organisation based in

Pakistan, to bring essential supplies to families in need.

Many families preferred to stay near their own homes, rather than move to

officially designated camps; Feed The Children is supporting 32 unofficial

camps, bringing aid to around 4500 people, including 1500 children.

Following the disaster, our appeal was simple:  we asked for blankets and

basic foodstuffs - rice, pasta and pulses - and the money to pay for

transport.  The response was magnificent.  With help from Pakistan Airways,

we were able to send nearlyfive tonnes of aid immediately, followed by two

shipping containers, each with 26-tonnes of essential goods.

Ongoing support is essential; more than one million people face a second

winter of inadequate housing.
