Liberia

A country recovering from a long civil war, Liberia has many problems.  The economy is fragile, law and order has not yet been established over the whole country, and there are still many thousands of internally displaced people living in camps.

Our partners in Liberia

Working with the Sean Devereux Children's Fund, Feed The Children is supporting drop-in shelters for street children, a rehabilitation centre for 1,000 children, a community school and transit homes for ex-child soldiers.

Feed The Children is working with the mission of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Liberia, to provide support for orphanages, schools, and schemes to develop skills in women and young people.

  • Orphanages, and refugee camp schools receive food, clothing and educational materials.

  • Support groups for women living with HIV/Aids receive sewing machines, sewing kits and fabric.

There is widespread ignorance about HIV/Aids in Liberia; testing HIV positive is regarded as a death sentence, and leads to depression and lethargy.

The women in these programmes learn that they can live with HIV/Aids.  In developing sewing skills, they have a means of providing for their families, and gain self-confidence.  At the same time, they can access the information they need to care for own and their children's health.
