Can your school or youth group support FTC with a sponsored sunflower
grow in 2008?
Thanks to support from Suttons Seeds, we have 5,000 packs of sunflower seeds to give to schools and young people's groups for educational and fundraising activities.
Last year, Gerrards Cross Primary School, Bucks, raised nearly £600 from their sponsored sunflower grow in 2007. Sorcha and Niamh Tisdall show one of their giant flowers
Harrowbarrow Primary School, in Callington, Cornwall, grew their sunflowers in 2006, beating drought and slugs to raise over £300!
Sunflowers get their name because they always face the fun, turning their flowers to track the sun's movements.
There are two types of sunflower; oilseed, used for producing oil, and non-oilseed, used for eating and cooking.
Every bit of the sunflower is useful; the flower petals are used to make a natural yellow dye. The stalks and leaves can be grazed by cattle, and even the seed hulls, left over after processing, are used as filler in livestock feeds.
Sunflowers are an important crop in many African countries; they have a relatively short growing season, and a highly efficient root system which draws nitrogen and moisture from deeper in the soil than many crops. This means they can be grown in areas which are too dry for other crops.
Thanks to Suttons Seeds, we have over £1m worth of vegetable and sunflower seeds to send to developing countries. We would also like to provide tools, fertilisers and training to subsistence farmers. Your efforts, with a sponsored sunflower grow, can make this possible.
